Title: The Lesson
Duration: 00:05:25

This was my first semester film from my first year in film school at S.V.A. I shot this in the fall of 1991 with a Bolex 16-mm movie camera with 300 ft. of B&W reversal film and an Arri lighting kit in Mammoth Billiards on 26th street NYC. The pool shark is played by my father and the kid was my classmate Neil Collogan. I had just recently got a telecine transfer and had not viewed it in about 14 years since I had lost a VHS tape that was of poor quality to begin with. Also I put it to the track “What is Soul” by Funkidelic. It is the same track that I played from a CD as I presented it to my class.

The titles and credits I recently added. I cleaned up a couple of the edits but left most of it untouched to preserve the RAW film school quality. Working with reversal, one has to remember that it’s the only print that you have that is being spliced up. And all is cut with a hand operated reel to reel and a plug in viewer to light up and magnify the film so you can see it. Avids and nonlinear digital off line editing were only available in the state of the art professional arena.

In classic DK style I did not get a grade for it cause I refused to follow the assignment and cut it in 10 edits which did have the coverage for. My money, my cut is the way I thought. I was allowed to present it to the class and although I did not get the grade the professor shook his head and said, “wow great story!”

Garage Punk

Photographed rock’n'roll shows always look the same to me, so this is how I do it!

Rock’n'Roll will never die and these guys helped keep it alive. Once again Michael H and his buddy’s and band Andy Hilfiger and Scott Lipps, New York Dolls Guitarist Steve Conte and bassist Sami Yaffa playing the classics of garage punk and helped me get out of my work funk.

Last night I attended my friend Michael H’s launch party for his new premium denim brand DeHoghton. He asked me to take pictures. His usual motley crew was there. With the likes of Tommy and Andy Hilfiger who are his good friends/brothers from his childhood growing up in Elmira New York. Michael is all about rock’n'roll and his clothes wicked cool.

Vanina Sorrenti with child April 07

As I walked home, I ran into Vanina with her new born of 5 months. We spoke for some time. We talked about what we were recently up to. She asked,” Are you an Aquarius?” I replyed,”Why do you ask?” She said,”…well you always have a whole bunch of stuff your doing… you just don’t do one thing. Most Aquarius’s I know are Art Directors cause they alway have their hands in many projects.”

I think she might have an a good insight as to what kind of employment I should seek. Hmmmmm.

This is her baby peacefully asleep.

The Blues

It’s been raining. And now that I have the studiodk website basically done, I can start to go back to what it’s all about. Doing things to put on the website or in this blog. This is what I do. Experiment! About a year and a half ago I decided to learn the guitar. I haven’t taking any lessons just tips from friends and I came up with this riff.
